Abstract: Do we want our government or the supermarket stores to tell us about how we go grocery shopping? The answer may lie in considering the outcome of how we shop.

Do we want our government or the supermarket stores to tell us about how we go grocery shopping?  The answer may lie in considering the outcome of how we shop. Consider two families, where each family follows different shopping habits. As shown in Table 1 below, Family A shops using disposable plastic bags for convenience at a cost of $ 109 per year, whereas Family B shops by bringing their own reusable fabric (made from cotton or jute) bags. It is clear that Family B uses only 5 reusable fabric bags during one year period with an upfront investment of $30.00, a potential saving of $79.00 when compared with Family A. This comparative analysis provides consumers with a clear choice of how to shop.
