Abstract: Some have argued for paper bags because paper is biodegradable and requires renewable resource to make them, our trees and forests. Agreed, but conscientious consumers should be aware of the few facts.

Some have argued for paper bags because paper is biodegradable and requires renewable resource to make them, our trees and forests. Agreed, but conscientious consumers should be aware of the following facts :
14 million trees are cut to make 10 billion paper grocery bags.
      • Takes more than 40 years to replace 14 million biologically rich trees in the forests.
      • Paper bags are not durable, meaning one can reuse them for 3-4 times at the most.
      • Manufacturing of paper bags from virgin timber results in the generation of greenhouse gases and other byproducts that pollute waterways and environment.
      • Being bulkier than plastic, paper waste takes up more landfill space.
      • Recycling of paper bags is expensive (cost of energy, collection, and processing) and does not address the bigger issue of reducing the consumption of disposable bags
