Abstract: About 15 million barrels of oil are required to make the 124 billion plastic grocery bags we consume annually in the U.S. At the current price of crude oil (US $ 130/barrel), to make 124 billion plastic bags would cost US $ 1.95 billion dollars. If so, what the American consumers pay at the grocery and convenience stores?

About 15 million barrels of oil are required to make the 124 billion plastic grocery bags we consume annually in the U.S. At the current price of crude oil (US $ 130/barrel), to make 124 billion plastic bags would cost US $ 1.95 billion dollars. If so, what the American consumers pay at the grocery and convenience stores?  Contrary to the much widely held belief, a charge of roughly 6 cents per bag is added to the grocery. We pay US $ 7.4 billion annually or US $ 20.0 millions/day. Therefore, our annual budget for the convenience of grocery shopping is US $ 7.4 billion. However, what about its impact on our environment and earth?

I like this article. We need more articles like this that address the plastic bags on a roll that shoppers use for produce & bulk foods. As a manufacturer of reusable produce/bulk bags I encourage everyone to try them out. There are all different kinds. Some organic cotton, some hemp, some synthetic. Mine are made of super stretchy technical fabric. Yes it's synthetic, however it performs well and I'm still using some of the prototypes from 18 years ago. This is what we are striving for, a reusable that lasts a lifetime. Best, Diana www.carebagsonline.com
