Disposable, high-density polyethylene grocery shopping bags is manufactured from petroleum, a nonrenewable resource. In United States, approximately 390 million plastic grocery bags are consumed each day, which roughly translates into 1.3 bags per person per day or 124 billion bags per year. In rest of the world, approximately 700 billion plastic bags are consumed each year. When adjusted for the population size (U.S. population of 303 million versus 6.6 billion for the rest of the world), U.S. consumes approximately 3.5 times more bags/person/day than the rest of the world combined (Figure 2). This figure does not include plastic shopping bags we bring home from other types of stores such as Target, Macys, Walmart, JC Penney, Best Buy, and Home Depot., to mention just a few.
